LAND ROVER SERIES III 4X4 PERFORMANCE PORTFOLIO 1971-1985
The second major face-lift in the life of the Land Rover was introduced with the Series III model in 1971. Production figures cannot be confirmed but it is thought that around 440,000 were built between 1971 and 1985. As this was a bad time for British Leyland most of the profits went into the car division and few changes were made. Even when Land Rover became a separate operating division in 1978 it took until 1983 for a replacement to be produced. Not every market took to the new vehicles so the Series III remained in low
volume production until 1985. This is a book of contemporary road and comparison tests, specifications and technical data, off-road reports, long terms tests, driver's reports, plus advice on buying a used example. LAND ROVER 90, 110, DEFENDER GOLD Portfolio 1983-1994
By the end of the 1970s lack of investment meant that the marque was now outdated. The introduction of the 110 in 1983 with improved suspension and more luxury was long overdue. The short-wheelbase 90 came just over a year later. These new models were aimed at the higher end of the market. Sales were steady due to longevity and reliability and the Defender replaced the 90 and 110 models in 1990. The Defender had the option of the 200Tdi diesel engine and had power-assisted steering. LAND ROVER DISCOVERY 4X4 PERFORMANCE PORTFOLIO 1989-2000
There are three distinct phases of the Discovery. The first (1989-1994) were characterised by square headlights and, in diesel form, the 200 Tdi engine. The second (1994-1998) had rectangular lights and, in diesel form, the SOOTdi engine. Since 1998 there has been a redesigned Series II vehicle which can be had with the Td5 diesel engine. The V8 petrol engine has been available since the beginning and has gone through various guises and between 1992 and 1996 there was a 4-cylinder petrol option though this was never a strong
seller. The most popular models have always been the diesels. The diesel has also made the Discovery into an off-roader's delight. Compiled by James Taylor this book brings together a selec
tion of sales literature and advertisements to illustrate the
Land Rover marque's first fifty years. It traces the story from
the first sales catalogue in 1948 through the 1950s and
1960s. In the 1970s the Range Rovers turned the marque
into acceptable everyday transport. In the 1980s passenger
transport dominates over utility themes with the Discover,
new Range Rover and Freelander.
