2009 didn’t go too badly in the end for most of us, and I hope you all had a good New Year. The club attended some good shows and there were Land Rover runs in Yorkshire and the West Country, both of which were well attended and very successful. We revamped the website and we had a new clubnights started by Leon Toon in North Devon off of the back of support from visitors to the Land Rovers South West show in Somerset, and by Kevin Jones in Surrey. The West Sussex clubnight used to cover Hampshire as well. A new clubnight was started in Hampshire and this is progressing well. We have also had a large number of new members joining the club, so we look forward to seeing some of them at events in 2010..
So what are we up to in 2010? Well, we have another new clubnight due to start in
South Yorkshire on 4th February. Thanks to Tony Ball for taking the lead in that
area. and we have a new Land Rover run in the Midlands which has been incorporated
into the Coventry City events calender, so this should be well worth taking part
in if you are able to do so. Thanks to Frank King and Co.for organising this. This
years’s National Rally is to be held at Eastnor Castle -

Failed M.O.T
Many Land Rover enthusiasts repair their own vehicles as we know. If you submit your vehicle for an M.O.T. early and it fails, you are still allowed to drive the vehicle from the test station to a place of repair (in other words you can drive it home) provided that it is not physically dangerous to do so and it doesn’t have faults which render it illegal for use on the road, such as bald tyres etc, which constitute a direct road traffic offence. What is not clearly evident is that it is illegal to continue to use the vehicle in any other way.
For example, if you have failed the test due to broken wing mirrors, you drive it home and order some new ones from a supplier. You now wait for them to arrive in the post. In the mean time you continue to use the vehicle to go shopping and to get to work. You are driving with no M.O.T. If you are stopped, you could be charged with driving without insurance as well!
It is widely assumed that the old M.O.T. remains valid until it’s original expiry date. Not so!!! Because the new M.O.T system is registered electronically onto the VOSA database, the moment that the failure is recorded, your current M.O.T. becomes invalid regardless of how much time was left to run on it.
The road traffic Police can check if your vehicle has a current M.O.T. directly from
their on-

Land Rover Thefts
Police Authorities around the country have been reporting a marked increase in the number of thefts of Land Rovers. It is thought that they are being targeted for the large quantity of aluminium they contain and also because they are relatively easy to break down for scrap metal. In the past, Land Rovers have been stolen from quiet country areas, but recently they have been taken in broad daylight from places such as supermarket carparks. The Police advice is to keep them as secure as possible. Arrests have been made for handling stolen goods (vehicle parts) so it may make sense to mark major vehicle parts as an aid to catching the people involved.
