Okay folkes, lets have your views to help me make a decision. The 2.25 in our 88 has gone a knacker, dont know what and me and Beasty's fed up with engine swaps, so we're going to replace rather than repair, its an ancient 3 bearing anyway.
I wanted to keep KTL as original as possible, so the 200TDI option is only there really to see what people think, cos this option means i have to make big alterations that i dont want to do. It also means 5 speed box and no overdrive - which Holly went to a lot of trouble with, so she won't be pleased
Do please leave a note as to what you chose and why, i am geniuinly interested in what people think of these engines before i put one in! _________________ There's only one tool in the Landy toolkit - a big hammer!

If you have a nice original 88, why on earth would you want to make it into anything else?
Once chopped and poked around, you might as well add other stuff and customise it! |

I've gone for the 2.5N/A.
Reason:-
You can rig it to look the same as the 2.25 5 bearing engine. It would look original but with a little extra power.
Best of both worlds.

David : very good point. I am planning a 109 SW project which will be kitted out for comfort. The 88 i want to keep as original as possible to look at, but with a few things underneath that make things easier for me, like an overdrive to imrpove fuel economy, and an electric winch to aid with greenlaning (fitted to a custom bumper which will nearly hide it).
John : to me the 2.5 and the 2.25 look almost identical anyway. While we're on the subject anyway, how do you identify these engines if you dont know exactly what you are looking at? If you show me a 3brg and a 5brg 2.25 i can tell the difference, but thats about it really _________________ There's only one tool in the Landy toolkit - a big hammer!

I'm not a stickler for authenticity, more praticality for everyday use. If it's to be a Land Rover engine then the 2.5 or 2.5t. If you don't want the winch visible, fit in the back and rig up to winch for or aft. |

I've gone for the 2.5 as I believe it mates up with your gearbox.

It does, which makes it a better proposition than the TDI, which requires modifications to the bulkhead and floor. on the project maybe, but not on this one _________________ There's only one tool in the Landy toolkit - a big hammer!

The block is virtually identical to a 5 bearing 2.25. Even if you get a bare engine, it will usually have a different flywheel housing (to suit the later LT77 gearbox). Also the flywheel is different. To convert it you need to change the flywheel and the housing. There are other differences, such as the waterpump pully and the head ancilliaries. The water pump housing and thermostat housing are also different. It will also have a different rocker cover and breather assembly fitted.
The main thing which is different is the start of the engine number which should start 12J. heck his carefully because there was also a very few 10J engines used on the 110 (2.25litre diesel run off from Series III production).
Hope this helps. _________________ 110 CSW 2.5 Petrol (soon to be gone).

It's really as simple as this!
The 2.5 and the 2.25 units are almost identicle.....almost identicle.....most won't be able to tell them apart but some will ok?
The water pumps on the 2.5 are moulded alloy where as on the 2.25 it's made of steel....one of the quickest ways to check the difference in the Classic Motoring world is to use a magnet! It's fool proof so....unless you don't care about originality, stick with the correct engine...QED |
