Hi,
Is there a tickover adjuster on the 2286 diesel, as my tickover is far too low (when warm). I am currently getting by with the help of the hand throttle
Also, on tickover, it is smoking blue smoke. Where should I be looking first to tackle this? Fuel pump timimg, fuel pump condition, injectors? or something much worse
Any help will be great,
Cheers _________________ John

Does the smoke smell of diesel on tickover? Does it clear once driving apart from the usual level of smoke which is normal? If so its the same as mine, I've been told it could be the timing and/or a worn/loose timing chain. Reason given is that when under load the chain tightens up but on tickover the chain 'flops around a bit' causing the timing to keep altering. When listening to the exhaust on tickover it appears to be mis firing a bit which backs up the timing chain theory. My next job, new chain,sprockets,tensioner/spring etc and a pump time up using the proper timing tool. After all that it could also be a dodgy injector but I personally will go down the timing route first then look at injectors. _________________ If Its perfect, then it lacks Character...Current Vehicle: Series 3 109 Hardtop 2.25 Diesel called Dolores (chequer plate free)

blue smoke is usually oil, most likely your valve stem seals have got old and brittle, perished. unfortunately head off to do. before you get the spanners out though might be worth a compression test to make sure your rings aren't worn. black smokes over fueled, white smoke is water or unburnt fuel. _________________ 1972 s3 lwb (dreadnought)

As Chuggers says ^^^^ blue usually = oil. I'd also suspect valve stem oil seals or maybe worn bores/piston rings. _________________ Currently:

You need to smell the smoke - is it diesely or does it smell like burnt engine oil?
If diesely, you have a pump timing/pump calibration/injectors type issue.
If engine oily smell, sounds like top end wear, as bore/ring wear would be ok on idle but smokey under load.
Get that nose in those fumes (temporarily!) - it will make your eyes smart but you need to identify the smell.

It is a diesel smell...
Quite nice though
Only really noticable on tickover - I am beginning to feel sorry for the car behind.. _________________ John
