I'm toying with the idea of fitting a winch to my Series 111. I've got a Fairey overdrive fitted - does this preclude a capstan winch?

Many thanks,

N

Shouldn't be a problem for a capstan winch. The overdrive fits to the back of the gearbox and a cappstan runs from a drive dog fitted to the crankshaft at the front of the engine. An electric winch is an alternative.

Turner drum winches also use a drive from the front of the engine and use a dog clutch to engage and disengage it...

Thought of going electric or you thinking of a 'period' feature?

Thanks. I'm just thinking about options at the moment. I can't afford anything yet, but, after last winter, would like to find something before the next snow comes down. (memo to Father Christmas!)

I've got an electric winch on the front of mine. Came in handy when I got stuck/bottomed-out on a very muddy crest while out playing.
Got out, attached the winch to the nearest suitable tree and pulled myself out of trouble...
Tis great having a winch......... You can going a lot further than you dare, knowing you can get yourself out of trouble if need be...

Looks fun, and great truck! I could have used a winch last winter to pull myself up a hill! Got almost up several times, but lost grip on the ice and slid back about 100 yards! Finally decided to take another route Embarassed

If you're looking for independent self recovery the electric drum winch might be an easier option. In the past, work and hobbies have taken me off road solo and the winch is a godsend. It has taken me out of trouble a few times!

IIRC the capstan needs someone outside to feed the rope to pull taught on the drum?
