The original Landrover steering column top bearing wasn't brilliant from new.

It all depends on what you call 'excessive' doesn't it. The opinion of the tester.
I once had a guy fail the 110 on 'excessive play' on rear suspension bushes and play in the droparm ball joint (you know, the one with the spring in it). That was until I showed him that they were brand new and that is just the way they are. As you may have guessed, I never went there again. Interestingly, my current MOT tester told me that Land Rovers can have up to 3" of lateral play in the steering because they have a sprung multilink setup.
