Marmite car, do you love it or hate it?

http://www.johnbrown4x4.com/current-stock/land-rover-series-3-john-brown-4x4-surf-edition-orr

Me i'm tempted to go this route, or to make a county clone (masai red), or a modern metallic defender olive green.................hmmm now where's my paint brush

(plan is to start next year.......the challenge is to keep it's characterful look whilst changing the color)

That thing is an abomination. I can't quite say why. It just is. Once upon a time you could do as you pleased with an old Land Rover. But now, with 'classics' being so popular, being 'as original' or not will seriously affect value, and it would be a shame not to keep something as increasingly rare as a 6-cylinder original. Of course, it's your truck, and if you want to totally destroy the value of your investment, go for the orange - maybe nobody will steal it that way. (Personally I don't think either of the other choices to the original would actually be any better - your truck is what it is - I think Land Rovers looking like they're pretending to be a different model to what they are look ridiculous - they just look like the owner couldn't afford the real thing and doesn't appreciate what he's actually got. Ok I've said enuf - I'll shut up now Smile )

I have to say it does have a certain something about it (the orange one), and it would be easy for the police to see/find if it was nicked!, other than the color, I don't like the plastic arches that they've added.

Personally I quite like the red and cream combo, it's original to series 3 models, and I want to make the interior a bit better than it was (i.e. I'm adding head rest seats at some point).

The green and black was taken from a photo out of Ben Fogles book with Prince Philip and the queen which was green with black safari roof.

Currently mine is a mix of bare aluminium, marine blue (not much), and 90% some random faded light/medium green......oh and lots of dents and scratches.

On the upside my 3yr old son has named my Landy for me, (Tinker pushed me over the edge to agree to it) it shall be hence forth known as 'Thunder'..........apparently that's what it sounded like when I got home minus it's exhaust (it fell off ten miles from home)

Lastly does the roller/paint brush work well for application?

I think red/limestone may only have been a Stage One colour and the stripes for county models (not sure they ever made a County 6-cylinder) A black safari roof is stupid - the whole point of a safari roof is to keep the interior cool, so it should reflect the sun's heat, not absorb it. The way yours is now sounds fine to me - I'd like to return my green one to its original Mid Grey one day but I'd spend the money on a galvanised chassis (maybe even a galvanised bulkhead too) first. As to the method of painting, get/do the best, most professional job you can afford - it'll show! (I seem to have said some more - sorry)

i looked at a 2.25 county 109" on an 'A' reg in masai red before I got this, still kicking myself that I didn't take it, as it was a good price (but chassis was non existent).

So having missed out on that I went for the 2.6.....I fell for the engine sound.

To clarify, it's not that orange I object to, it's the black. I actually think orange is a pretty cool colour for a certain kind of Land Rover - there's a Santana lwb pickup appears every so often in Classic Land Rover magazine that lives in Ireland that's orange that looks amazing (I think it's actually a 6-cylinder IIRC) - it was already orange when the present owners stumbled upon it in Spain.

Yep, you may be right - I've just recalled a picture of a Masai Red Series 3 2.25 County, but it was a SWB. And now I really will shut up.

HI Slow,

Feel free to do whatever you like to your Landy. I disagree to some extent with Geoff regarding originality - over the many years of manufacture, there were hundreds of variants produced and even more modifications that were 'official' from the factory floor. I can see nothing wrong with personalising your vehicle to suit your needs or likes.

Remember, whatever you do to your vehicle it'll still have the soul of a Land Rover!

I am destined to be misunderstood - you may think it's just a matter of personal taste but I think there is a difference between a working vehicle's genuine history and 'tarting up'. Of course any owner is free to ruin their own property if they so choose, and I'm free to shake my head in sadness/gentle mockery/disgust/outrage - like the Stage One that was on ebay recently with a Freelander engine in it! (didn't get a single bid - which I think might prove my point) Sad

With regards to Geoff's observation about the Stage 1 with a freelander engine, I retract my comment that they all have the soul of a Land Rover. Someone obviously saw my comment and decided to prove me wrong.................

Marine blue and limestone, definitely! Smile

The orange and black wouldn't look too bad on a Defender but the Series landy should have a more traditional colour in my opinion. Each to their own though! Wink

The orange is definitely an eye-catcher though... Surprised

Looking at the background with the other good looking series 2's and 3's.....I am surprised the vendor would even contemplate trying to sell that! That looks more worthy of an ebay knockout....like the butchers do at 5pm at the market.....

Jeez! - I only just looked at the price - is it trying to be a NAS 90? 'Cos it ain't no such. For that I could have a snazzy yellow Stage One pickup with a 4.6 V8, galv chassis, one ton rims, the works ..

Having reread the advert they have done it themselves, I would suspect that they are going for the surfer dude people who all drive those modified old VW campers

For some reason the biggest thing that bugs me about it are the plastic stick on arches.

Of course you never know perhaps the RAC will buy it 😃

Have just found this - they even stole the idea from Land Rover:

http://www.carmagazine.co.uk/car-news/first-official-pictures/land-rover/land-rover-defender-run-out-specials-stay-of-execution/

Not one of Land Rover's better ideas in my opinion, even on a 110, but then I think Land Rover always were better at engineering than design (the beauty of the Land Rover being originally, and still as far as I am concerned, a product of its functionality)

Or, the ultimate in class, the rarest of the rare, short wheel base Stage Ones in Trinidad:
