I was walking through the railway station car park this afternoon looking at all the blobby monotonous Eurojunk and deciding I wouldn't want to own any of it when I came across 2 110 Station Wagons. One was a gleaming black 57 plate and the other a tatty prefix S plate with chequer plate everywhere and a very crusty rear crossmember. So there was the choice. The immaculate black one with all the expensive electronic junk or the tatty S likely to need probably major chassis repairs if not a replacement.
So, which one if you could have only one and it was free?

Decisions, decisions....

Can I have both and decide after Ive tried them?

Is the S-reg a Td5 or Tdi? I do like my Tdi but I must admit the thought of a Defender with a newer interior and more mod cons would be nice. But then the older Defender would be a blank canvas if it was to have a chassis change. It could have a few other subtle upgrades and the chequer plate removed. Cool

Getting soft in my old age, Id go for the newer one. At least, thats what Mrs K would let me have! Smile But my heart wants the older one...

I'm with Knappster. My heart would say go for the old one but my head would have the newer one.

Omitted to state you have to keep it for at least 10 years.
Didn't notice whether the S was Td5 or Tdi. Too much chequer plate.
No Rich, you can't try each one beforehand.

I'd have the new one every time - I spend enough time (and money)trying to keep Henry on the road without having the addition of yet another money pit into the household.

But once youve put a new galvy chassis and all the other bits that you need to change, want to change, ought to change while the body is off or upgrade, youve got a near-enough new Landy with some history! Smile

Thank God you get a better choice on ebay than in Alan's imagination - or do I mean his local car park? (or any car park for that matter) (chequer plate is Land Rover cancer - and electronics aren't real Land Rover at all) (ok, if forced to choose, I'd take the old one every time - for my own self-respect)

They were the only 2 proper vehicles there Geoff as the blobby Discoveries don't count. I too would go for the S one and have it rebuilt on to a new chassis and remove all the chequer plate.

Ebay is awash with Land Rover bonnets disfigured with chequer plate or the scars from it - you couldn't give them away - I sometimes wonder where in hell they all come from (I only know because I spent years looking for a good clean original Stage 1 bonnet without the spare wheel fixings)

Hopefully it's a fad that will disappear (we hope.) I don't see the point of it either.

No, of course not - it's your Land Rover, you can do what you like with it - only the government has a list as long as my arm (well, much longer actually) of what you can't do with it - wait, it's not a diesel is it? - well, that'll include drive it into just about any big city soon without paying a king's ransom - or at all - so you may have more important things to worry about than the taste police.
