If its chrome it'll last longer I suppose? or at least the case will, we all like stainless exhausts (well I'd like one) so why not more stuff???

i have always been told that chrome is porrous, and if you dont look after it or the material underneath isnt zinc plated, the steel will still rust out.. Al?

Now to explain....

The alternator you see was chromed by me about 2 years ago and is for a mini. (apparently this Lucas alternator was fitted to loads of vehicles)

A friend of mine re-builds auto electrical parts and was going to get them chromed and re-build them to sell on ebay. Then his wife of 30 years asked for a divorce and he lost his mind and it has sat on the floor of my office since then.

My alternator broke leaving me stranded and I was amazed to realise it was the same as the chrome one. So the chrome one got fitted yesterday afternoon, mainly because I didn't want to pay over the odds locally for an alternator.

The questions about chrome answered.......

The alternator casings are aluminium. I do not advise plating alum as the plating does not bond properly to the surface as it does with steel or brass. It has a special pre-treatment to get it to stick at all.

Although we call it chrome plating this is missleading as the chrome is just the final layer.

The weather protection and the good looks come from the layer of nickel that is put on top of the steel. The chrome layer is just a flash of plating that is put on the nickel to stop it tarnishing, and does not offer any weather protection itself.

How long it lasts is mainly due to the quality of application of the nickel underneath as if you put it on fast it becomes hard and stressed and is purous.

This is why cheap plating does not last (like the plating on the handle of my winch lasted 2 weeks)

That depends on what your ultimate aim is?

If your wanting a genuine vehicle that as others have said...it'll soon be dirty so it won't matter then that's ok but if your wanting to show the vehicle in a Custom show... well flash is best, ok
