I'm in "negotiation" with Smart Water for a discount for the club.
Smart Water, for those who don't know, is a forensic property marking product. It consists of a liquid glue, that will glow under UV light, with tiny dots suspended in it. Each tube contains thousands of dots marked with a code unique to your application. In the event your vehicle stolen and broken for parts the Police will be more able indentify where those parts have come from and help prosecute offenders.
The product is a primarily a deterrant to thieves but is also a tool to aid law enforcement, especially if large numbers of us use it, if a thief is caught with one stolen part from hundreds of parts he has thats not as good as if he is caught with lots of marked stolen parts, its would much easier to prosecute him for the crime.
Smart Water are offering us a discount on a combined car and home marking kits. Smart Water MAY get you a discount on your car insurance and, depending on your insurer, get you 10% off your home insurance.
If my Landy is nicked I'd hope that who ever took it gets caught and given a custodial sentance rather that community service! _________________ Membership No. 5778

interested yes, but how durable is Smartwater? and will it really cope with the rigours of LandRovers?
I think its a great idea, and all the stuff at our club is treated, but is it worth us spending on, if it doent survive the first off-road day?
just asking! _________________ There's only one tool in the Landy toolkit - a big hammer!

Smart Water suggest that you avoid places that get repeatedly wet or very hot. I'm sure between us we could draw up a list of suitable places to apply it which would also make things easier for the Police to find markings. I'm going to mark my add on's like my Snorkel and OE A Bar for starters! What are the highest value secondhand parts for a SIII or Defender? _________________ Membership No. 5778

I would speculate that parts like doors -especially 1 piece -and small parts adding up are likely to give good prices. What parts do you see most and fetching most at sodbury and similar?
However -I'd put it behind doorcards, fittings, headliner, in lockers etc.
More to the point, who keeps a record of all the serial numbers -eg Axles etc -which have numbers?
Ultimately the more places marked, the better. Surely if the police thing any part nicked, they'll check... Also, as long as you keep a record of where you've marked, you pass that on when you report the theft?
as to wether i'm interested, but I dont know what it costs in the first place -a 10% discount if its 80% more than I can afford, and it may still be too much! _________________ Driving a YELL-ow! One Ten County Utility Wagon with 300Tdi Conversion.

Yep, definitely interested - I've been thinking about it for a while. As mentioned ^^^, its the saleable items that are at risk so IMHO its well worth doing.

Price is TBC, I'm just trying to get an idea of how interested folk would be in a combined home and vehicle kit. I can get us a discount on just the vehicle kit if thats what people would like. It just seemed to make sense to offer the combined kit as you could get a 10% discount on your home insurance. _________________ Membership No. 5778

yep i'm sure its a great product and it may well reduce insurance but as far as the police are concerned forget it(apologies to any policemen using this forum i'm sure your very commited) around us they dont even bother to turn up. had loads of stuff pinched out of my garden and parts unbolted and nicked from my vehicles are the police bothered? not in the slightest. the neighbor even got a good description of motor and people plus number plate of thier transit for one theft and the police never showed up and eventually returned my call saying theres nothing they could do about it. my mother in law around the corner had a lad beaten to a pulp on her doorstep by a gang, despite 3 calls to the police nobody turned up, after 4 days she cleaned all the blood up off her door and gave up calling them. and please dont think i live in a rough area i dont its just not policed!
sorry for the rant. _________________ 1972 s3 lwb (dreadnought)

Can you confirm the details of the kit - by car & home, do you mean they'll have the same 'DNA', or are they simply a car kit and a home kit (with different DNA) sold together?
I was just thinking that if/when we eventually either sell the landy or move, then it might be awkward re-registering them with SmartWater. _________________ Currently:

On a 2007 onwards defender - the bonnet, they are being nicked quite a lot - v. expensive item! _________________ There's only one tool in the Landy toolkit - a big hammer!

Over a 1000 members and only 9 votes????
Come on folks I can't gauge the feelings club members if only 1% of them vote! Even the European Union Election had a better turn out than that lol!
Please spread the word and encourage others to vote!
